Bloor Street Bikelane

12:26 Nov 11 2018 Bloor St. W.

Description
The Bloor pilot bike lane, running 2.4 km between Shaw St. and Avenue Rd., was made permanent by a 36-6 council vote on November 7, 2017 after a one-year pilot for the initiative, which was described by the City Transportation Manager as the most-studied road project in North America. http://dandyhorsemagazine.com/blog/2017/11/08/bloor-gets-a-bike-lane/

The pilot showed that cycling numbers had increased dramatically and business revenues had also grown. The number of cars on Bloor has declined while motorist travel times are up only marginally. The bike lane had substantial support not only from residents who cycle but from all local residents’ associations (particularly the ARA), the media, various community groups, including Bells on Bloor, Cycle Toronto and Doctors for Safe Cycling, and the local Bloor-Annex BIA. Extensions of the bike lane east to High Park and west to Sherbourne are already under discussion and further studies are anticipated to begin shortly.

The popularity of Bloor St. for bicycling can be traced back to the 1890s. https://nowtoronto.com/news/bloor-bike-lanes-120-years-in-the-making/

The idea of bike lanes is undeniably a good one for the safety of bicyclists. However there has so far been no mention of a method to determine the effect of this change on an increase of vehicular traffic into the residential areas north and south of Bloor street. I travel by car almost every day north on Spadina and west on bloor. The corner at Spadina and Bloor has always been a nightmare but I fear it will get worse once the bicycle routes are completed. My intention would be to go west at Harbord and thread my way north to Bloor through the residential area. This also is very slow and difficult because Harbord has bike lanes which make the right turn into the residential area hazardous for me and the cyclists. Will these Bloor street bike lanes really provide for better traffic flow? I trust that a comprehensive non-bias report at the end of the one year pilot project will provide accurate results about all the impacts on the neighbourhood.
